Dealing with Family When You Don’t Want to

Christmas will be celebrated at my house <span style="font-style: italic">again</span> this year. I have a close relative who is coming over with his new wife and four children.

Just under normal circumstances, I would say I have no desire to speak to or see this relative nor meet his new wife and children at any foreseeable time in the future. Granted, it leans more toward the “I’d prefer not to” but it’s not a strong preference. For Christmas, I flat out don’t want them to come.

Well, I’m not doing anything about it. They will be here so I have accepted it. I have no intention of mistreating a bunch of total strangers or the relative for that matter but lord help me. \o/

as long as your bar is stocked with your fave liquor, you will be fine. Try out some new mixed drinks this holiday.

I have quite a few family members where I have to just &quot;shake my head&quot; while looking at them from across the room . Even the ones I cannot stand provide comedy relief at xmas

Of course I will not be making it home for xmas this year so won't see them.

Boy oh boy – the holidays.

Hubby and I decided there’s no way – NO way, we’re putting ourselves out this year.

We’re tired. Down to the bone. For too, too many years now, I’ve been disgusted by the commercialism.

To tack that on to going someplace I don’t want to or having someone in my home that I don’t want – it’s too much.

Hubby has a good friend from back home who brought her 2 kids up here from JA in June.

She hasn’t been working since then.

4 people in a cramped junior bedroom in the Bronx. (4th person is the “husband”)

A 6 year old and a 19 year old. The 19 yr old is taking computer classes – she already has a boyfriend. I see pure trouble around the bend for her.

The 6 yr old is thriving in school.

This is their first Christmas here.

The mother is having a warm time – literally, no $$ to buy gifts for them – hardly can manage food much less presents.

We’re inviting the 3 of them for Christmas and have bought gifts for all – mostly things they need and that are practical but a few fun things for the little one.

Life is too too short.

You have to do what makes you happy.

Gen and Kia, I'm set up to carry on like I have a problem lol. I already have some bottles in my bedroom closet.

Kia, I cannot tell you who exactly is responsible for inviting them but I know who wasn't.

Yuri, I'm weary too. This is it this year. Next year, I'm completely removing myself from the equation and taking a trip somewhere. That's the gift I want.

Well I've been for a long time been coined &quot;the crazy Jamaican&quot;, so folks around me know I've no issues telling them fi GDAB. Them no come unless invited and them know them nu supposed to display them feelings to me if/when mi no except fi them invites.

If there is a relative that I cannot stand to even speak to, they will not be invited. Period. No apologies.

If that relative was invited by other relatives to my house, I would have no qualms about uninviting them.

this is the first Xmas in the entire time I've known Mr Skells that I will not be joining his family for the holidays. Mi SIL call mi tideh an leff message bout she waan mi plan NYE pawty wid her...mi nah do nutten but tan a mi yawd pan Xmas day an watch old movies. And NYE if mi nuh fine someweh fi go get junk mi will jus go a mi bed..

i had a few that wd come every year so one year I made corned beef (di tin one, not di stoosh wan weh inna deli lol ) and rice and sugar and water. never saw them again I know i could have told them not to come, but this way was more fun, and before any of you say anything let me admit it, that was sooo very wrong of me lol but the memories of that meal is very hilarious, especially when I am up the night before Christmas still fulfilling orders from those who want to change the menu last minute and everyone else is sound asleep
